Excuses, Excuses….

Yes, marketing is not easy.

Yes, marketing takes time and effort.

Yes, you need to market every week.

Yes, there are a gazillion things you could do.

Yes, there are many seemingly valid excuses for why your marketing isn’t producing the results that you want.

Yet excuses can’t be put into a sales pipeline, or into your bank account.

So let’s explore some of the more common excuses and knock them out of your way.

It worked for them, but it’s not working for me.

Many entrepreneurs and professionals try what others in their space (or similar) are doing.  News Flash!  Just because it worked for them (or appears to be from an outsider looking in) doesn’t mean it will for you.

Why?

You are not them! You may actually be stifling your creativity. You need to put your best foot forward and be YOU. What they are doing may not be your forte, or you may feel awkward or uncomfortable with the strategy because you know that it is not allowing you to be the best you can be.

Ever notice how sometimes the better the marketing sometimes the worse the product or service is? So beware, they may not be doing as good as it seems.

I just don’t know how

That is just ridiculous.  Someone you know does. Maybe it is a networking friend, or someone that is in the same industry that is willing to provide assistance or guidance, or there is always a coach or class you can take to learn how.

If you are not wiling to ask for help or invest in learning how to do something, then you need to rethink your commitment to your business.

I know, sounds harsh, but in today’s world there is education and shared experiences to learn from literally at your fingertips.

What we have is good enough

Is it?  Really?  Maybe it is…just make sure that you have analyzed the data and that you are not settling for less than what you are capable of.

I just don’t have enough time

Could be true…but you need to find the time.  Most likely if you don’t have enough time to market then (hopefully) it is because you are delivering your goods and services to a multitude of clients.  If not, then you need to make the time.  If you are just focusing on the bare minimum just to ‘get-it-out-the-door’ then you have not scheduled enough time to be innovative and creative and you won’t be able to showcase your best efforts or your top differentiators.

Without dedicating time and energy to make your marketing have a WOW factor you are destined to have a feast-n-famine result.

I don’t have the resources

“I can’t afford it.”  “I’m not good at graphics.”  “I’m awful at tech.”

Resources are available. They are. You may have to be creative, look beyond the ‘norm’, but you will be able to have the resources you need. Think about doing a trade for services or products for what you need.

Leverage your network for resources and information that will help you do what you need to do.

Stop eating lunch out or cancel all those apps or streaming services.

Find the time, find the resources, do what you need to do in order to not have to settle for less. Figure It Out so you not only achieve what you set out to do, but more importantly, what you are utmost capable of.

I have to be everywhere – it is exhausting!

Biggest mistake: trying to be everywhere.

One would think that being all over would provide more brand awareness. But often it does the exact opposite. It can not only spread you (and your time and money) too thin, it can actually harm your reputation with the appearance of being shallow, needy, and not able to provide depth for all the different portals you are spreading words to.

Step back from the many and focus on one. Then take that time you have saved and work on a fan-worthy marketing strategy, or prospecting, or a high-touch customer experience.

No, marketing isn’t easy…but it is simple.

There has never been a time in history when we had more resources at our fingertips. Thanks to the digital explosion we have many powerful tools available to us. Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs and professionals misuse, underuse, or overuse the tools we all have readily available.

It is easy to stay behind a keyboard, or even a camera, but often those actions can take away the human-to-human interaction that consumers crave.

Isn’t it ironic that even though we are able to stay connected to others faster and easier than ever, we are actually the most starved generation for community.

Bottom Line – it is your business.  So, if you are making excuses you are only hurting yourself.

Think of it this way…would you say this….

“I am going to live my life the same way everyone else does.”

“What I have is fine, it’s good enough, I don’t need more.”

No, you wouldn’t.

So just be you.

Remember, failure to maximize the efforts you are putting in is failure to maximizing your opportunities to see results.

Make the effort – not the excuses.
