Growing Your Business Through Gratitude: A Thanksgiving Reflection

Every November, we’re reminded everywhere – stores, cards, commercials – to slow down, take stock, and give thanks. We all know that gratitude is good for the soul- but did you know that it’s one of the most effective (and overlooked) growth strategies in business?

When we showcase gratitude – toward our clients, partners, team members, and even competitors – we strengthen trust, deepen loyalty, improve our reputation, build lasting connections…and referrals.

Think about it…you don’t recommend businesses because of flashy marketing – you recommend the ones that make you feel appreciated. Gratitude leaves a positive emotional residue; it makes people want to stay connected, to share your name, to help you succeed.

In a noisy, transactional world, sincere gratitude stands out.

Creative Ways to Show Gratitude This Season

Here are some thoughtful (and simple) ways to show appreciation that can strengthen relationships and naturally spark referrals:

1. Send a “Thankful for You” video

Skip the generic holiday email. Record a quick, personal video message for a client, partner, or alliance.
You don’t need fancy production – just say, “Hey (Name), I was reflecting on this past year, and I wanted to thank you for being part of it. Working with you has meant a lot.”

Use zoom, loom or even your smartphone – simple, easy, quick!

It’s personal, it’s human, and it will be remembered long after the pumpkin pie is gone.

2. Write a gratitude post highlighting others

On LinkedIn or Facebook, write a post about a few people who’ve impacted your business this year. Tag them and share how they’ve made a difference.

Example: “This Thanksgiving, I’m especially grateful for (Name) – your partnership pushed our project forward in ways I didn’t expect. You remind me why I love doing what I do.”

Not only does this build goodwill, but it publicly celebrates others – and that draws people toward you.

3. Give “gratitude spotlights” to your clients

Feature a client, vendor, or partner in your newsletter or social media.
Share their story, what makes them great, and how others can connect with them.
It’s a win-win: you’re showing appreciation and helping them grow. People don’t forget that kind of generosity.

4. Send a handwritten note (yes, really!)

You have probably heard me say this a gazillion times if you have been following us at all – maybe even received one from us 😊

Emails are easy to ignore. A handwritten note? That gets opened.

Write two or three sentences that are personal and specific:

“I’m so thankful for the trust you’ve placed in us this year. You’ve made working together a true joy.”

These tiny gestures create disproportionate impact.

5. Surprise someone with a “gratitude gift”

Instead of year-end corporate gifts, consider something thoughtful and personal.

  • A book that inspired you (with a note about why.
  • A gift with their last name engraved on it (we have given pizza stones and wooden cutting boards). NOT the logo bearing ‘swag’ we all receive and promptly throw out.
  • A small donation to a cause they care about – or one you do and shout that it was possible through their support
  • Locally made treats from your city

The more authentic and tailored, the more memorable it becomes.

How Gratitude Naturally Generates Referrals

When people feel appreciated, they don’t just stay – they advocate. Gratitude creates emotional connection, and emotional connection fuels word-of-mouth.

A client who feels genuinely valued will say:

“You’ve got to work with them. They’re the real deal.”

A partner who feels recognized will open even more doors for you. Even team members Alliances or referral partners who feel appreciated become brand ambassadors in their own circles.

And unlike traditional marketing tactics, gratitude doesn’t cost much – but the return is priceless.

A Simple Gratitude Challenge

Between now and the end of the year, pick five people who’ve made a difference in your business.
Reach out personally – call them, send a note, or record a short video – just to say thank you.
No pitch. No ask. Just appreciation.

You’ll be amazed by the warmth (and unexpected opportunities) that follow.

Unfortunately, many people wait till now, November, to share and give thanks. Gratitude isn’t a seasonal strategy – it’s a mindset that multiplies over time.

When people feel seen and appreciated, they don’t just stay in your orbit; they invite others in.

So, this Thanksgiving, take a moment to thank the people who’ve helped your business grow. Then commit to continuing to give thanks throughout 2026.

Members, use the Accountability LAB each month to do 5 a month, that is 60 people you intentionally thank each year.

Probably more than you did in 2025!

Do it. Commit to it.

See the difference in makes – I promise it will….

Oh – and THANKS for reading and being a part of the Network Build Grow family! We appreciate you and couldn’t do it without each and every one of you – you are why we do what we do!  Thanks!
