Business Lessons from the College Football Playoffs:

Strategies for Success

The 2024-2025 College Football Playoffs have been a rollercoaster of emotion, strategy, and sheer grit. Sitting with my family, immersed in the high-stakes drama, I couldn’t help but marvel at the parallels between the field and the boardroom. The college football playoffs are more than just a thrilling spectacle; they’re a masterclass in strategy, resilience, and teamwork.

Business, much like football, is a game of inches and audacious leaps. It’s about seizing opportunities, mastering your mindset, and knowing when to huddle up or throw the Hail Mary. As we dissect the lessons from this year’s playoffs, let’s lace up our proverbial cleats and step onto the business field armed with wisdom from the gridiron.

Play Big, But Never Underestimate the Small Moves

In the Rose Bowl, watching Ohio State’s quarterback Will Howard connect with Jeremiah Smith for a 45-yard touchdown on the third play, was like seeing a mic drop in real-time. It was bold, strategic, and set the tone. But ask any coach: the glory plays are built on the back of relentless small gains—short passes, disciplined blocking, and unwavering persistence.

The Business Playbook: Early, decisive actions can establish momentum and set you apart from competitors.

In your career, don’t just chase the glory moments. Consistency in the small stuff—like how you show up for your team, follow through on commitments, or refine processes—sets the foundation for those “big play” opportunities. When the spotlight hits, you’ll be ready.

YES, a single play can change everything—a long pass, a crucial interception, or a game-winning field goal. Championship teams know that while big plays grab headlines, it’s the consistent execution of small, strategic plays that wins games. Like a running back who gains a few yards at a time, progress is cumulative.

In business, the same principles apply: daily discipline and attention to detail pave the way for long-term success. Without this discipline you won’t’ be equipped to recognize and capitalize on the glory opportunities. Be persistent in your preparation and seize those rare moments when opportunity knocks.

Turn Fumbles into Fortune

In the Sugar Bowl, Notre Dame turned what could have been a game-changing mistake into a game-winning fumble recovery and touchdown. Talk about resilience! They didn’t dwell on what went wrong; they acted on what was possible in the moment.

One of the most inspiring aspects of college football is watching a team fight back from the brink of defeat. It’s a reminder that setbacks are not the end but a test of resilience. Whether you’re facing a tough quarter in business or a major setback, the key is to remain present and adaptable.

The Business Playbook: Every setback in business carries a gift. Maybe it’s a lesson, a pivot point, or an opportunity to innovate. The question is: will you fixate on the mistake, or will you recover the ball and score? As Buddha reminds us, “The arrow that hits the bullseye is the result of 100 misses.”

A well-timed strategic move can turn challenges into victories.

Master Your Mind—Your Most Challenging Opponent

Ohio State didn’t just beat Oregon on the field; they beat their own past. After a tough loss in the regular season to a big-time rival they just can’t seem to defeat, they could have crumbled under the weight of doubt and self-recrimination. Instead, they regrouped, focused, and delivered a commanding performance.

The Business Playbook: In business, your greatest competitor isn’t the market—it’s your mindset. The voice that whispers about past failures or plants seeds of fear about the future.

The greatest challenge often isn’t external—it’s internal. Doubt, fear, and the temptation to dwell on past failures can cloud judgment and hinder performance. Winning requires mental discipline: the ability to stay present and make decisions based on possibilities, not past baggage.

The best athletes and business leaders master their mindset and focus on the present.

Who Are You Playing For?

A theme in every playoff game this season is team cohesion versus individual glory. Teams like Penn State and Ohio State thrived because their players clearly knew they were working for each other, not just themselves. Compare that to teams that fall apart chasing solo achievements.

The Business Playbook: Who are you playing for? Yourself? Your team? The fleeting applause of external validation? Get clear, because your “why” determines how you show up—and whether you endure when things get tough. Sustainable success is built on purpose, not ego.

Teams like Penn State showcased clarity and determination, executing game plans that reflected their commitment to excellence, leading to a 31-14 victory over Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.

Notre Dame utilized all aspects of their team to their maximum advantage…special teams make BIG plays, so did the defense in creating key turnovers and stops, and the offense came through time and again. All three factors on the team made victory a reality.

Business Insight: Are you playing for personal accolades, team success, or something bigger? Teams with a clear sense of purpose outperform those driven solely by external validation. In business, clarity about your “why” fosters consistent performance and sustained motivation.

Ensure your actions align with your core mission and values. Purpose-driven efforts resonate more deeply and yield consistent results. Collaboration and trust in your team’s abilities drive superior outcomes.

Opportunities Won’t Wait for Convenience

The Sugar Bowl journey was delayed and fraught with challenges, yet the teams were ready to play the big game. The postponement due to unforeseen circumstances, exemplified their preparedness and adaptability. And when the moment came to capitalize on Georgia’s mistakes, Notre Dame didn’t hesitate.

In the 2024 playoffs, Notre Dame created confusion on a 4th down. First they brought out special teams to punt, then ran off the field and exchanged for the Offense to go for the short yardage to gain the First Down. The Defense scrambled to match, got caught off guard, as the Offense was hoping for an off-sides call to give them he yardage they needed. At the last possible tenth of a second a defensive lineman flinched and the Cetner snapped the ball. First Down!

This exemplifies how being prepared can transform potential failures and chaos into wins. The Quarterback was running out of time but another team member, the Center, was paying attention and capitalized on the play.

The Business Playbook: Opportunities in business rarely knock and may arise unexpectedly. They show up when you’re stretched thin or in the middle of another project.

Stay prepared to act swiftly, even when conditions aren’t ideal. Success comes to those who can pivot, adapt, and act quickly—even when it’s inconvenient.

Learn, Adapt, and Keep Moving

Championship teams, like businesses, don’t succeed on talent alone. They review every play, learn from every mistake, and adjust. Even mid game! They call a time out to halt momentum, they tweak and adjust to what they see on the field, they change their game-plan mid-stream to counteract what they see coming from the other sideline.

Teams that adjusted their strategies in response to in-game developments found success. Those that didn’t have played their last game this season – and for some players (and coaches)…their last game.

The Business Playbook: Growth requires humility. It’s about learning from both wins and losses, adjusting your approach, and staying open to new ways of thinking.

Flexibility in strategy and a willingness to learn from experiences are vital in a dynamic business environment. Take time-outs to reset and reassess your strategy when needed.

The 6 Plays of a Business Champion

  1. Be Strategic, Yet Flexible: Don’t fear failure—it’s just a pivot point.
  2. Have Clarity and Know Your Purpose: Align every action with your core mission.
  3. Call Time-Outs When Needed: Rest and reassess to stay sharp. Refocus and Recharge. Sometimes just in order to stop the momentum in the wrong direction.
  4. Use Your Team’s Strengths: No one wins alone. Leverage collaboration.
  5. Enjoy the Game: Success is great, but the journey is what truly matters.
  6. Lead with Confidence: Trust in yourself and your team and don’t forget to enjoy the game.

The Sky’s a Boundary, Not a Limit

As we wrap up the lessons from this year’s playoffs, let’s remember: every champion started from the same field. Every winning play began as a practice session. And every business breakthrough was once a crazy idea scribbled on a napkin.

So, suit up. Play your game. And when the stakes are high, remember: the arrow that hits the bullseye comes from 100 misses. (Budda)

It’s not perfection that wins—it’s persistence, preparation, and heart.
