The Power of a Timeout Because Quitting is Not an Option

“Quitting has permeated our society and become a core value by which many people live by.” – Dan Britton

As we close out three-quarters of the year and head into the final stretch, many of us may feel like we’re falling short of the trajectory we set in January.

The temptation to quit creeps in, whispering in our ears that we’re failing. But what if, instead of quitting, we simply call a timeout?

The Purpose of a Timeout

In sports, timeouts are called when:

  • Nothing seems to be going our way.
  • Momentum is shifting in the wrong direction.
  • We feel overwhelmed or are falling behind and need to re-strategize.
  • We’re burned out from pushing too hard.

Business and life are no different. The journey to success is never a straight line – it’s a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Soaring towards success one moment and plunging into discouragement the next.

But quitting shouldn’t be an option. You can’t (or won’t) forfeit a game before it is over – don’t do that on yourself or your business.

The key is understanding that setbacks don’t define us; our response to them does. We all hear a lot about resilience, pivoting, and responding instead of reacting. All good stuff. But a timeout is not quitting, it is a way to increase resilience, and to respond rather than react. It’s a moment to reevaluate, recharge, and return stronger.

The Cost of Quitting vs. The Power of a Timeout

We have seen many people quit just before they succeed. They are standing on the cusp: the dominoes are lined up, the bases are loaded, and that one last ‘hit’ brings it all home.

But instead of calling a quick timeout, they give up, they throw in the towel. It is frustrating for us to watch. But why does it happen? Too often they didn’t have someone in their corner – encouraging them not to quit. A coach or a cheer-squad helping them to see that all is not lost.

Best advice: surround yourself with people who believe in you. Beware of “fair-weather fans” in your life – those who cheer when things are going well but disappear when challenges arise. Your success should not be dictated by outside voices but by your own commitment and perseverance. Others can and will support you – but YOU are the driving force behind all that you achieve.

It is important to remember that one loss doesn’t erase all of your progress, and success isn’t about avoiding failure – it’s about pushing through it. Failures will occur…it is ok.

Here is another frustrating thing we see as business coaches – Jealousy of others success. Jealousy of others’ wins only drains energy that could be used for your own growth. Viewing others success as stealing from your own is crazy! Instead, celebrate their victories. There is enough to go around.

Why call a timeout when quitting seems easier? Remember this: what you are doing is bigger than just you. If you quit, you quit on them too. The motivation to keep going must be bigger than just ourselves. There are people out there that you can help, there are others counting on you to keep going!

The desire to win must outweigh the desire to quit and when we include others, we hold ourselves more accountable and responsible for progress. Think about it, you can give up on a bad round of golf and just head back to the clubhouse (it is just you), but you would not walk off a basketball court in the middle of a game – others are counting on you. However, you may need to call a timeout to reassess and change momentum.

The Value of Taking a Timeout

Taking a timeout isn’t a sign of failure and it is not quitting – it’s a strategy for resilience.

When you feel like giving up, take a step back and ask yourself: Do I really need to quit, or do I just need a break? A timeout gives you space to reevaluate, adjust, and come back stronger. It allows you to see new opportunities, shift your approach, and reignite your motivation.

A timeout allows us to:

  1. Regain Perspective – A timeout allows us to step back from the chaos and see the bigger picture. Often, when we are too close to a problem, we can’t see the solution.
  2. Adjust the Game Plan – Just like in sports, if a strategy isn’t working, we need to change it. A timeout gives us a chance to analyze what’s not working and realign toward a better approach.
  3. Prevent Burnout – Pushing forward without rest leads to exhaustion. By taking a break, we allow ourselves the necessary recovery to perform at our best.
  4. Boost Creativity and Innovation – Sometimes, the best ideas come when we step away and give our minds room to explore new solutions.

So, as we enter the last quarter of the year, remember this: Quitting is not an option. Taking a timeout is. Use it wisely and watch yourself come back stronger than ever.

Victory belongs to those who refuse to walk away.

  1. Timeouts are powerful. I remember many instances in my basketball “career” (lol) where we were a skeleton team of 5 or 6… many times our timeouts were just to catch a breath! And that’s powerful. Slow down, breathe, move forward.
