PR Is No Longer Optional – It’s Your Front Door to the AI Age
You’ve heard of SEO. You’ve optimized your website, sprinkled in your keywords, maybe even hired someone to help you climb the search rankings. And that still matters.
But there’s a new game being played – and most small business owners don’t even know they’re losing it.
It’s called Generative Engine Optimization. And if you’re not thinking about it, you’re already behind.
I am by no means an expert in anything AI! But, the world has changed…and will continue to change. And here’s what’s happening right now whether you’re paying attention or not:
Millions of people are no longer Googling their questions. They’re asking AI – ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity. And AI isn’t pulling up a list of links and letting users decide. It’s synthesizing information and delivering a answer. Even Google has an AI generated “opinion” above the links. One answer. A confident, curated response that sounds authoritative.
The question is: are you in that answer?

Because AI doesn’t browse the internet the way a human does. It draws from what it’s been trained on – and what it continues to reference from credible, established, publicly available sources. Industry publications. News outlets. Recognized experts. Peer-reviewed content. Authoritative voices with a documented track record.
In other words EARNED MEDIA.
If you’re only living on your own website and your own social media, you are essentially invisible to AI.
Your website is your house. Social Media is the window dressings. But PR is the road that leads people – and now AI – to your front door.
It is EARNED MEDIA that builds a credibility trail.
There are three types of media:
- Paid – ads you buy
- Owned – your website, your blog, your social channels
- Earned – coverage, features, citations, and mentions from credible third-party sources
Most small businesses and entrepreneurs live almost entirely in paid and owned. They’re broadcasting to their own audience, advertising to cold ones, and wondering why their authority isn’t growing.
Earned media is different. It’s not something you can buy. It has to be earned – through relevance, relationships, and real expertise. And it is, without question, the most powerful of the three.
Why? Because it carries something the other two can’t manufacture: credibility by association and edification.
When a respected industry publication features you, when a journalist quotes you as an expert, when a podcast with a real audience invites you to speak – that signal travels. It tells the world, and now it tells AI, that you are a legitimate voice worth listening to.
Here’s the reality of how generative AI forms its understanding of who you are and what you do:
It looks at patterns across the web. It reads what established sources say. It notices who gets quoted, who gets featured, who shows up in conversations that matter. It weighs credibility – not just keywords.
So when someone asks an AI tool, “Who are the top networking strategists for small businesses?” or “What’s the best community for entrepreneurs in the Charlotte area?” – AI is drawing from what it has seen, read, and indexed from trusted sources.

If Forbes has mentioned you, you have a signal. If a respected business journal has quoted you, you have a signal. If you’ve been featured on a recognized podcast, written for an industry publication, or been cited as a source in a meaningful article – you have signals.
If none of that exists? You have silence.
And silence, in the age of AI, is not neutral. It’s invisibility.
What Counts as a Credible Source
Not all coverage is created equal. AI — like the sophisticated systems it is — recognizes authority. Here’s where you want to show up:
- Industry and trade publications in your niche (business journals, marketing publications, entrepreneurship platforms)
- Local and regional business media – your city’s business journal, chamber publications, regional magazines
- National outlets – Forbes, Entrepreneur, Inc., Fast Company, HBR (yes, these are achievable – more on that in a moment)
- Established podcasts with real audiences and indexed content
- University or research institution references if applicable to your work
- News wire services – press releases distributed through PR Newswire, Business Wire, or GlobeNewswire get picked up and indexed widely
- Guest contributions on platforms with high domain authority
The throughline in all of these: they are sources that other sources trust. That’s what you’re building toward.
How to Actually Get Featured – Practical Starting Points
You don’t need a publicist with a Rolodex and a Manhattan office. You need a strategy and consistent execution.
Start with your local business press. Your regional business journal is more accessible than you think – and it is indexed, credible, and read by people who matter. Pitch a story angle about a trend you’re seeing in your industry, a community initiative you’re part of, or a milestone worth covering. Local journalists need sources. Be one.
Write for platforms that accept contributors. Forbes, Entrepreneur, and Fast Company all have contributor programs. So do dozens of respected niche publications. A well-pitched article establishes you as a thought leader and creates a credible, indexed reference point for AI to find.
Get on podcasts – strategically. Not every podcast, but the right ones. Look for shows whose audiences align with your ideal client or community. Podcast appearances are transcribed, indexed, and referenced. Every appearance is a citation in the public record.
Issue press releases with intention. Don’t save them for when you have “big” news. Speaking engagements, new programs, community partnerships, awards – these are all press-worthy when framed correctly. Distribute them through a wire service so they move beyond your own channels. Utilize the NC Press Association for this! (or your state association)
Be a quoted source. Platforms like HARO (Help a Reporter Out) and its successors connect journalists with expert sources daily. Sign up. Respond consistently. Being quoted in even a mid-tier publication builds your credibility trail over time.
Show up in the public conversation. Comment with substance on industry articles. Write LinkedIn posts that get shared. Speak at events that get covered. Participate in panels. The more your name appears – in context, in credible spaces – the stronger your signal becomes.
One press mention is a moment. A consistent stream of earned media is a reputation.
AI doesn’t make decisions based on a single data point. It looks for patterns – repeated signals from multiple credible sources that confirm you are who you say you are. That means PR is not a one-time campaign. It’s an ongoing practice.
Think of it like networking – which you already understand. One conversation doesn’t build a relationship. Showing up consistently, adding value, being present in the right rooms over time – that’s what builds real influence.
PR works the same way. Show up. Be quotable. Be findable. Be part of the public conversation – not just your own private corner of the internet.
Here it is – plain and simple:
SEO got you found on Google. GEO – Generative Engine Optimization – gets you found in the answers AI delivers to your future customers.
And the bridge between where you are and where AI can take you is earned media.
Not ads. Not posts. Not a prettier website.
Real coverage. Real citations. Real credibility – built over time, in spaces that matter.
Your brand deserves to be in the conversation. PR is how you earn your seat at the table.
And in the age of AI? That table just got a whole lot bigger.
Start building your presence. Get featured. Get quoted. Get found.
The front door is open – make sure it leads to you.

Absolutely spot on. 3rd party citations are even more important now (Google reviews, LinkedIn reviews, Reddit), not that they were not important before.
Amen
Could not agree more. The earned media landscape, particularly traditional media, is more competitive than ever with the consolidation of local outlets, and yet earned media is more important than ever for GEO. I love working with clients to build thoughtful and creative earned media strategies and drive results for their businesses!
It’s very true. I’ll never forget a statement Gary Vee said… YEARS ago… “Soon, if someone says, Alexa find me an electrician and your name isn’t the one she delivers… you’re in trouble”. I haven’t “googled” anything in years, because I’m asking chatgpt for the answer so I can have a “conversation”. Also — if I google now — I read the authoritative text on the top and never click a link. Patterns change and if they are changing for me as a consumer — then I better take notice as a business owner too.
