Buyer’s Remorse Is Real – And It’s Your Job to Silence It

Your customer just said yes. They signed up, paid the fee, bought the program, joined the community. And then… they went home.

And the quiet voice started.

Did I make the right choice? Is this really worth it? What if it doesn’t work? What if I’m not ready?

You didn’t do anything wrong. They didn’t change their mind. This is just what happens when humans make decisions – especially ones that cost money, time, or a real commitment to change. Buyer’s remorse is not a reflection of your product. It’s a reflection of their humanity.

But here’s the critical part: what you do next determines whether they stay – or disappear because the quiet voice is already talking

Every new customer, client, or member you bring in has an internal monologue running in the background. You can’t hear it. They probably won’t tell you about it. But it’s there.

It sounds like:

“I hope this was worth it.” “I wonder if I’m the only one who doesn’t have it together.” “What if I can’t keep up?” “What if nobody notices me here?”

These aren’t dramatic fears – they’re quiet ones. And quiet fears are the most dangerous, because they don’t announce themselves. They just slowly erode commitment until one day, your customer is just… gone. No complaint. No confrontation. Just a cancellation and a shrug.

The antidote isn’t a better sales page. It’s a better customer journey.

Most small business owners, entrepreneurs, and professionals spend enormous energy getting the yes. The pitch, the follow-up, the close. And then they move on to the next prospect – leaving their new customer to figure out what happens next on their own.

That’s a mistake.

The moment someone says yes is not the finish line. It’s the starting line. And if you don’t meet them there – with intention, with warmth, with clarity – the quiet voice wins.

A defined customer journey means you have a deliberate plan for every touchpoint after the sale:

  • The immediate confirmation – Does your new customer feel celebrated? Do they know what to expect next? A warm, personal welcome message does more than a generic receipt. At NBG we send a handwritten note PLUS an email and sometimes even an actual phone call!
  • The onboarding experience – Are you walking them in or leaving them at the door? Simple, clear next steps eliminate confusion and build confidence. In the 2 memberships we run (NBG and The Speaker League) new members get a series of emails helping them to navigate and get involved.
  • The early win – Can they experience something valuable quickly? Give them a reason to believe they made the right call before doubt has time to settle in. We do a Member Spotlight and even interview members on the podcast.
  • The ongoing touchpoint – Are you checking in? Acknowledging them? Making them feel seen – not just sold to? We use SendOut Cards to help give that personal touch with postcards each month arriving in their mailbox.

The point is…None of this has to be complicated, it just needs to be a system. It does have to be intentional.

Speak to the Fear They Won’t Say Out Loud

Here’s something most businesses never do – and it’s one of the most powerful things you can: address the doubt directly.

Not in a defensive way. In a human way.

A simple line in your welcome message can do it: “You may be wondering if you made the right choice. You did. Here’s why…” That’s it. That one sentence disarms the quiet voice, because it shows you understand them – not just their purchase, but their experience of making it.

People don’t just want to be customers. They want to be known. They want to feel like the person or brand they chose gets them. When you acknowledge what they’re feeling before they even have to say it, or even admit it to themselves, you build something more valuable than a transaction. You build belief.

And belief is what keeps people. Not discounts. Not flashy content.

Belief you can get them where they want to go and that you will do what you said you would do!

Lend them your confidence in you and what you provide.  You know your offer is great. You believe in what you do. But your new customer doesn’t have your confidence yet – they’re borrowing it. And if you go quiet after the sale, they have nothing to borrow from.

Reinforce the decision. Remind them of the value. Show them what’s possible. Introduce them to others who’ve walked this road. Let them see the community, the results, the momentum they just plugged into.

At NBG, we don’t just want members – we want people who feel at home here. Who know they belong. Who walk into a room and feel the energy of others who are building something real, just like they are. That doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because we show up – before, during, and after the yes.

If you don’t have a defined customer journey yet, start here:

Day 1: Welcome them warmly. Celebrate the decision. Set clear expectations.

Day 3: Check in. Ask how they’re doing. Answer questions before they have to ask.

Day 7: Deliver an early win. Give them something valuable that confirms their choice.

Day 30: Reconnect. Acknowledge their progress. Invite deeper engagement.

That’s it. Four touchpoints. Four opportunities to silence the quiet voice and replace it with confidence, belonging, and momentum.

Your customers want to stay. They chose you. Give them every reason to believe that choice was the right one – and then keep giving them reasons.

Because in business, the sale gets them in the door. But the journey is what makes them stay.

And the ones who stay? They become your greatest advocates.

Build the journey. Speak to the fear. Earn the loyalty.

That’s how you grow.
